Or you can telephone, email or write for further information.
I have not been before, is it difficult?
Full training is given by the boat yard you hire from. Have a look at the copy of the Boaters Handbook and also the video download, which are full of useful tips. Look at our pages on the Boat Handover Scheme.
What are the boats like on a narrowboat hire holiday?
There are literally hundreds to choose from. They vary in design, facilities and sophistication. So once you have chosen the area you wish to visit, the time available and the budget you wish to spend; look at the relevant websites to narrow down your selection. They all have photographs and boat plans. The Enjoy England Boat Grading Scheme page give details on independent quality assessment.
Can I take pets?
Some companies allow you to take pets.
What route should I do?
There is a huge range to chose from on literally 1000’s of miles of canals and rivers. Look at our waterways map for where the navigations are. Most websites give detailed suggestions of routes. Our waterway Gallery pages have links to pictures of the wonderful landscapes and heritage you will encounter.
How much will it cost?
Price is determined by time of year, the length of hire, size and quality of boat. Prices per person, on larger boats can be amazingly good value.
How long can I hire a narrowboat for?
Anytime from a few hours to several weeks are easily available. Most hirers cruise for a week, but 3 and 4 night short breaks are widely available.
I don’t want to steer a narrowboat, are there any with crews?
Yes: For longer trips choose a deluxe full board cruise on a hotelboat.
Trip boats also take passengers for shorter excursions, some serve meals or are available for special events such as parties.
I only want to go for a day trip?
Many boat yards hire out day boats. Or you can chose a crewed trip boat.
