The canal boat grading scheme explained with APCO

Enjoy England - Canal Boat Grading Scheme

The hire boat industry developed its own quality assurance canal boat grading scheme over ten years ago. At first this was administered and inspected by the Heart of England Tourist Board.

In recent years the scheme has gone national and is administered by the English Tourist Board, with very similar schemes using the same criteria in Scotland and Wales.

The boats are visited, by trained independent inspectors at regular intervals, who examine them against a published list of facilities present and their quality.

A matrix of results is compiled and the boats are awarded 1 to 5 Stars.

The scheme is intended to be an independent assessment of quality, and will assist potential hirers to choose an appropriate boat for their holiday needs.

Involvement in the scheme is a considerable financial expenditure for member companies and demonstrates their commitment to high standards and continual improvement in your holiday experience.

The Quality Rose Logo is used beside companies which are in the scheme.

There are separate schemes for Hire Boats- both narrowboat and cruiser, and Hotelboats. The basic criteria for Star Rating is outlined below.

The Enjoy England Canal Boat Grading Scheme The Enjoy England Quality Rose
The Enjoy England Quality Rose reassures you before you check into your holiday accommodation that it will be just what you want, because it’s been checked out by independent assessors. Enjoy England assessors work all year round, ensuring that the standards you find are what you would expect. And since we’ve done all the work, you can relax, book with confidence and get on with the real business of having a fantastic break.

The Quality Rose is the mark of England’s official, nationwide quality assessment scheme and is an independent, reliable, impartial assessment of quality covering just about every type of place you might want to stay. The variety of accommodation on offer is truly astonishing: from caravan parks to stylish boutique hotels, farmhouse B&Bs to country house retreats, self-catering cottages by the sea to comfy narrow boats perfect for getting away from it all. There are nine main types of accommodation, with a host of different options in each – see below for more details. But whatever your budget or preference, you can be sure of finding something to suit. Think of the Quality Rose as your personal guarantee that your expectations will be met.

Our Ratings Made Easy: Generic

The following descriptions of what to expect apply to all types of accommodation and to both stars and diamonds. Use them as a general guide to what you can expect.
or Simple, practical, no frills.
or Well presented and well run.
or Good level of quality and comfort.
or Excellent standard throughout.
or Exceptional with a degree of luxury.

Our objective quality ratings give you a clear indication of accommodation standard, cleanliness, ambience, hospitality, service and food. Using a clear star and diamond rating system (1-5 stars or diamonds), they provide the reassurance you need about what to expect before you arrive. Generally, the more stars or diamonds, the higher the level of quality. For individual types of accommodation, the quality rating allows you to distinguish between both the quality of the accommodation and the facilities on offer. In fact, we’d like to make things even more simple for you in future – so very soon Enjoy England star ratings will be exactly the same as those awarded by the AA and the RAC because we’ve all used the same rigorous criteria. That way, you know where you are!
